Since the whole TalkTalk debacle throwing me back into the dark ages and obviously well behind schedule my blog work has been all but non-existent. I’m not done with those fukkas quite yet however I’m holding off and waiting to see if my bill is reduced later this month as promised by one of their clueless telephone ‘tards before I kick up more fuss. I have no doubt that this matter is yet over.

The Resurrection of Mallaz.co.uk

Earlier this year I launched my official website Mallaz.co.uk but after some issues with my webhost at the time iPage, another company who are shite when it comes to customer service, I was forced into scrapping that. Work is now underway at the reconstruction and resurrection of Mallaz.co.uk which will be your one-stop shop for all things Mallaz.

As standard my site will be the number one place to keep updated as to my live music calendar including both the events that I personally and independently organise and promote, as well as details on events involving artists that I am affiliated with.

My work is predominantly based in music as in independent events promoter and a band manager, having also formed and performed in my own (failed) band and managed a few others. The music section of Mallaz.co.uk will of course contain a blog where I prattle on about music, with live reviews, reviews of releases, local gig guide and also with added features such as Artist Spotlights (highlighting a local act for whatever reason), as well as bringing back Song of the Week, which was a regular feature on this blog until the cross-over and then untimely return from Mallaz.co.uk. Already I have a long article containing my take on several live local events as well as a review of Lost Highway, the album by Parastatic. This article is being constantly added to and the publication postponed until the rebirth of Mallaz.co.uk as I just don’t have the freedom to do everything I would like to with this free WordPress blog.

I will also be putting a lot more emphasis on the art side of my work after a recent increase in interest in my old Horrorshow Artwork project. I am willing to consider commissioned work and my rates are negotiable, however I am selective in the work I undertake, not purely down to time restraints I just don’t do anything I don’t want to (that’s why I look so good for my age). I am available for EP and Album art, so long as you’re music’s not shite, I’ve also designed logos, posters and other such crap and do have some pieces for sale, but I did knock back £300 each on the first three Horrorshow Artwork images so don’t expect me to part with any of those cheaply. The Horrorshow Artwork series is very personal to me, hence the ridiculous price. I can assure you that my prices for commissioned work are a lot less harmful to your bank balance and as I have previously stated I am open to negotiations on work that I am enthusiastic about.

Right that’s my music n art shit covered aye? Don’t forget the standard Mallaz blog though, the one where I spout my shite on all sorts of subjects. Sports a big one, I’ll probably be getting back into writing about football at some point coz that’s just not happened since my demotion back to this shit blog and also I do like a good pop at the news now and then and will be getting my vote on tomorrow for The Police and Crime Commissioner elections, seeing as this is the first time I’ve ever been registered to vote. Boom!

Band Stuff Updatery

First off, as you know I’ve been managing local Funk band Gingersnap & The Style since summer and recently took the same position at a brand new Experimental Punk band Miss Danby and the What. So now I’ll tell you a bit about what’s happening with them.

Gingersnap & The Style Pile

Recently Gingersnap & The Style Pile performed at The Golden Lion in Jarrow for my associates at ToddRoxx Events after having performed at my last event, the SOLD OUT Mallaz presents… BiG BEAT BRONSON (Excusive & Intimate).

After three months as their manager I am afraid my relationship with Gingersnap & the Style Pile has had come to an end. Instability within the band has forced two key line-up changes recently and has caused progress to stagnate. Certain members of the band seem to have lost enthusiasm and it has been agreed that this is no longer a mutually beneficial arrangement and during the time Gingersnap & The Style Pile need to reformulate their group my time could be better utilised on my current projects. Hopefully it won’t be long before Gingersnap & The Style Pile are back on their feet and I wish them the best success.

Miss Danby and the What

Miss Danby and the What are a fresh new band fronted by Bryonie Danby, who some of you may recognise from her work as a solo artist. This brand new Alternative, Experimental Punk act formed only in the summer of this year and currently have only made on live performance at The Cluny.

It’s still all early doors for Miss Danby and the What but in my opinion there is a great deal of potential in the group and the three current members Miss Danby, Mr Nissen and Mr Hanrahan have struck me as the type of band with a drive for success, a passion for music and most importantly a sense of fun. There is one piece of the Miss Danby and the What puzzle missing, a versatile and committed bass player.

In the heighth of festivities in Newcastle City Centre on Wednesday 19^th December, Newcastle-based Indie band Bonsai Five will take control of the upstairs function room at The Bridge Hotel to host a night of live music entitled The Festive Fiasco.

For an entry fee of only £3, which is payable on the doors which open at 8pm, you can start your Christmas celebrations early by witnessing four live bands in action.

The Festive Fiasco features; Maps Are Fiction, the hosts Bonsai Five, The Face as well as the fantastic Miss Danby and the What.

I worked with The Shake Appeal in March this year when they performed a set at The Telegraph in Newcastle for me. I’m also familiar with a couple of members of the Creep Void too as they have attended several of my events in support of Washington-based Awkward Weed, although this will be the first time I have worked with The Creep Void on a professional basis. As things currently stand it will also be the first time I have worked with Warning!, who have come highly recommended from several sources, Miss Danby and the What (at least n the role of an event organiser) and also the very first time I will be working with Insangel, who will be performing the equipment hire and sound engineering duties at Amateur Night at The Big Top. DUE TO TALKTALK’S DOUCHBAGERRY…

Recently My Blog’s Been on the Back Burner!

FUCK TALKTALK!!!

Obviously over the course of the last month or so my internet “provider” TalkTalk has left me in the dark ages over the course of the aforementioned period of time. After being left without a functional internet connection for a couple of weeks while TalkShit had made me repeatedly read through useless information (information that is actually displayed on the website and information that in no way helped identify the cause of the problems with my internet connection). Are you with me so far? Or has the repetitive on-hold song become so fukkin tedious that you’ve hung up?

What it was that had actually caused the problems to my internet connection with TalkTalk was work being carried out on a telephone pole directly next to my place. During the process of this maintenance, those aforementioned engineers had totally dropped a bollock. I had suspected that this due to what would normally be an overheard line lying across my back garden as though it was attempting to top up its tan. In other words, when I reported the problem to TalkShit I actually told them the cause of the exact cause of the problem within that initial contact. What followed that was comical at best, hilarious from a neutral point of view but not when it’s happening to you.

After I had initially reported the problem over a followed by of having intermitting internet connection and being made to switch things off n on n off n on again and then having to dig out the little screwdrivers to clart about with the box to see (shock, horror) no improvement, the internet connection that I had been sporadically receiving over those few days just packed in all together.

Yet another telephone call to re-report the problem and to find out the status was now on repair. TalkTalk had decided they should actually bother to send out an engineer. So, after four days of no internet connection at all and drawing ever closer to a full month since the situation began, TalkShit finally get their fingers out their hoops and send out an engineer.

The engineer had to be getting paid by the hour judging the time it took from TalkShit “sending” him until the point that my connection came back. However, during this entire fiasco I have only managed to physically speak to one person from TalkShit who has “assured” me that I will be compensated for the time that my internet connection has been down. Well I fukkin hope so!

I’ve currently only got a couple of months left on my TalkTalk contract and after various discussions with a wide range of people that I know, it seems these shenanigans aren’t a one-off or even a rarity with TalkTalk, they’re reputation is shambolic. I’ve been given information and details relating to other broadband providers who provide their services without such ignorance and lack of respect to customers. As things currently stand I have no desire to stick with TalkShit thanks to the time they’ve cost me over this last five or so weeks, and we all know time is money. During one of the (many pointless) discussions with TalkShit advisers I was informed that they would reduce my bills as an apology for this ridiculous standard of customer service, which is frankly disgusting, and I fully expect these changes to my bill to be in force when they next start demanding payment for their “services provided” in the next couple of weeks.

This isn’t the last I’ve got to say on these work shy scabby bastards though, so expert to witness the finer details of this customer services catastrophical fuck up to be broadcast and not before too long.

MUSIC

Obviously for those of who remember that I’m in the business of music will be wondering what’s going on seeing as I haven’t been spewing my shite about that artistic format that we all know and love as often as I would have been, yet at the same time haven’t been running any live music events since ‘Mallaz presents… BiG BEAT BRONSON (Exclusive & Intimate) back in September.

Well the TalkTalk twattery hindered the publications of a few articles early in October and in turn has had me running around chasing my tail, far behind schedule in what has become an increasingly hectic period of my existence. I had written a couple of live music reviews from early in October when the TalkShit troubles began so have been adding to that article as and when I’ve managed to get out and make appearance at gigs and things.

I’m currently updating and editing that information to assure it is all correct at the time of going to publication. I have made it to some outstanding events this month and will soon publish an article relation those recent events and the once mentioned here so far, but that will all most likely be published on Mallaz.co.uk as I am now in the process of rebuilding it. Miss Danby and The What

I’m very proud to announce that recently I have been acquired by a very impressive local band by the name of Miss Danby and the What in the role of their manager. The band formed in the summer of this year and made their debut soon after in an impressive set at The Cluny in Newcastle. Miss Danby has an incredible, unique vocal talent and there is a cool Experimental Punk element to their sound provide by the rest of the What. This band definitely has the ability to set themselves apart from the crowd.

Although it is still very early days with Miss Danby and the What I do believe that they are a band worth the time and effort and the hard work that I pour into every challenge that I am enthusiastic about. I couldn’t be more genuine in saying that Miss Danby and the What have the drive and ambition to make big things happen and are very much a band that I am exciting to have the opportunity to build a good working relationship with.

Currently though, a slight stumbling block for Miss Danby and the What is their need for a new bass player. If you want to join an Experimental Punk band fronted by an exceptionally cool and talented young singer/songwriter and you have ambition, are dedicated and versatile then this could be the role for you.

My Next Currently Confirmed Event

Yeah, it’s been a while since my sell-out at The Bright Hotel that showcased the outstanding BiG BEAT BRONSON performing with a full live backing band in what was, by all purposes, intended on being the last event run by me. It was a very successful event and the things that have happened since that event have changed my perception on a lot of matters in life.

Instead of just jacking it in completely to focus on other ventures I have been urged by several different careers advisers to head down the route of self employment in music and arts based business. It was an idea that I had been put off from following the fiasco of working with certain acts who failed to contribute anything to the scene and atmosphere that I was WORKING towards. The majority were DJs, along with a good handful of bands have fallen far short of expectations, however I’ve not slept since Sunday and this part of my blog is to inform you….

The first event that I had (notice had…?) fully confirmed and booked for 2013 is named Amateur Night at The Big Top and will be held at the trusty The Bridge Hotel on Castle Garth, Newcastle on Saturday 2^nd February 2013. Mallaz presents… Amateur Night at The Big Top combines four highly-talented, well-respected and unsigned local Rock & Roll bands.

**This event was fully confirmed until last week when Kraken Sound (the hire firm providing the sound equipment and engineers) decided that they no longer wanted to work the sound for Amateur Night at The Big Top due to the artists being involved being Rock bands. This has proved an irritant as pay-out structures for the artists and people involved were calculated on the basis of the equipment and sound engineering costing the price Kraken Sound had quoted me. The only slight positive that I can take from this turn of events is that I have three months to procure a replacement whose rice does not affect the total expenditure of the event, otherwise I could sell this event out yet still lose part of my investment capital**

Miss Danby and the What

The newest of the four unsigned bands that will grace the stage at The Bridge Hotel is Miss Danby and the What, who formed this summer and made a great impression in their debut performance at The Cluny some short time after. It was a performance that spurred this NARC review;

“Support act Miss Danby and The What, performing live for the first time, were a new find. Danby’s vocals are at once sweet and harsh – like sandpaper dipped in dairy milk, only a lot more pleasant – which the band underpinned with a Lynchian score by virtue of a near fatal dose of reverb.”

As mentioned before, I now work with Miss Danby and the What as their manager so I’m confident that they will take this opportunity to impress everyone that is in attendance to the same extent that they’ve impressed me.

The Shake Appeal

The Shake Appeal actually performed at my second entirely independent live music event at The Telegraph in March this year and left a lasting impression. I originally booked The Shake Appeal on the recommendation of a couple unconnected people and I am really fond of their music, which has at times seen the South-Tyneside based Alternative Rock group likened to Be Your Own Pet and Rapture.

The Shake Appeal are the only of the four acts to be performing at Amateur Night at The Big Top and I am confident that they will add to the sociable atmosphere that I am hoping to create. In fact I am in regular contact with Phil Morgan, the bass player in The Shake Appeal, and his other group People Making Noises performed an event for me at the end of August at Mallaz presents… Head Of Light Entertainment at The Cluny 2.

From the information currently at my disposal, The Shake Appeal will next be performing live on Thursday 29^th November at The Dog & Parrot through Something Else Promotions. Stay tuned to The Shake Appeal on their website for further developments and more details relating to upcoming events.

The Creep Void

The Creep Void are an act that will have no trouble integrating themselves into the social element of what I am creating in North East music. Several members of The Creep Void have been in the audience of some of my previous live music events, actually supporting the local music scene. That’s something I think should be seen more often. So that’s a positive working in the favour of The Creep Void before I even start on their music.

The Washington/Gateshead Alt Rock band have been together since April last year and have a list of influences longer than a Scouser’s charge sheet. In December they will release the album Apotheosis which will then be followed by the video for the single Not For God’s Sake in January.

The Creep Void Album Launch for Apotheosis will be help at Plugged Inn in Sunderland on 1^st December and features support from; One Man Revival, Awkward Weed, People Making Noises, Scarlet Conviction and Indigo Vertebrae. You get all of this for the sake of on poxy quid? Bargain!

Warning!

Warning! are a Gateshead-based, three-piece, Alternative, Rock band that have been drawn to my attention after several glimmering recommendations from within the North East music scene, making Warning! an act that I have very high expectations of.

Warning! have been a staple fixture within the North East music scene since 2009 and since then have being going from strength to strength since. Their next live performance is at The Indigo Rooms in Sunderland on 17^th November. Unfortunately I currently have no further information regarding times or prices for that event s you may need to find to find that out for yourself.

On BBC Newcastle, Nick Roberts had this to say about Warning!, “There are a lot of rock bands knocking about at the minute … A lot of them aren’t very good … These guys are an exception”

What Next???

Well as I mentioned earlier in this blog I have an article relation to the musical exploits I have witnessed since the beginning or October, however due to TalkTalk metaphorically sodomising I have missed the boat on the majority of the gig reviews and most importantly Parastatic’s album review. The publication of any more reviews and such has been sidelined due to the ever pressing need to reconstruct my Death Star Mallaz.co.uk

Unfortunately this free WordPress blog limits functionality and I am increasingly finding that it’s incapable of performing certain duties. The need for total freedom only available though having my own website has been intensified recently due to the fact that Facebook now want paid for events to be made entirely available. I was already losing patience with Facebook as it is but if it keeps heading down this path it shall soon render itself redundant. I could witness Facebook die its horrible slow and painful death while feeling not a shadow of remorse.

I’ve been saying t a long time to musicians, Facebook does not constitute a worthwhile internet presence. For music you would be better off using Soundcloud or Bandcamp to quickly name a couple or you can even find several bog providers that could more useful than Facebook. A Facebook page IS NOT A WEBSITE although too many acts seem to think a Facebook is just as good. In my opinion, if a band takes itself seriously then they should have a website. If a website is above your budget then set up a free blog and use that and/or Soundcloud as your online visitors’ main port of call. Websites, bogs and Soundcloud are accessible by anyone without them having to create an account to hear your music yet also offer an incredibly easy option to link to all of your other online profiles. But Facebook is dying it’s death now, think about it!

Artists/Bands/Musicians prioritise getting a website! That’s a bit of FREE advice for you!

A Public Service Announcement

We’re at the middle of the month and musically there’s still a lot on offer this month. Depending on where Ed Zachary you’re based and/or how far you’re willing to travel in the quest of good music then you could be in for a treat with live performances from some of my favourite acts from across the region making appearances at various venues, including BiG BEAT BRONSON headlining the last Mallaz presents… live music event, Teesside-based Head Of Light Entertainment gracing Sunderland twice and Emergency Door Release’s second EP launch party. Headlining this exclusive finale is, perhaps fittingly, Newcastle’s hottest musical prospect BiG BEAT BRONSON. Before UK Hip Hop’s Dynamic Duo Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze officially joined forces with the exceptionally talented vocalist Eliza Lawson & DJ Lkp, Baron & Breeze were performing as a pairing before Eliza became involved, often appearing as a guest vocalist just as she did when Baron, Breeze and Eliza performed a set at my first official event at The Telegraph in Newcastle on Friday 3^rd February.

BiG BEAT BRONSON recently released their EP entitled May Contain Nuts and sold out The O2 Academy 2 for the EP’s launch night in August. They have not only been my favourite artists to work with over this short period of time but also the act to have made the most progression. Bands have lost and replaced members, some have even split and some have simply failed to gig and have faded into obscurity, whereas BiG BEAT BRONSON have gone from strength to strength and received acclaimed reviews.

Supporting BiG BEAT BRONSON are Teesside’s premier skiffletronica act Werbeniuk, a band that have a unique set-up consisting of 4 singers, 3 drummers, 2 Basses, guitar, samples and percussion. Grapevine at The Dog & Parrot

 

Grapevine is a night of Motown, Soul, Doo-Wop and Northern Soul music hosted by four of my friends, two of who are actually former flatmates of mine, and is staged at The Dog & Parrot once a fortnight, on the first and third Friday of the month.

The next Grapevine event is on Friday 21^st September and will feature classic footage on the projector wall, a hardwood dancefloor, a roof terrace, drinks offers and our incomparable selection of music – all for just £3 on the door. (Facebook Event)

Head Of Light Entertainment in Sunderland Twice

Unique and quirky Teesside-based Head Of Light Entertainment began life as a solo act with just Carl Green but has now grown into a quartet with the debut of their new drummer Graeme at the latest Mallaz presents… live music event at The Cluny 2 at the arse-end of last month. Head Of Light Entertainment are an outrageously talented act combining their distinctive bouncy Head Pop with some of the most intelligent and witty lyrics that you’ll ever likely hear. I also suspect that there is more than simply tryin to progress their sound that can be attributed to Head Of Light Entertainment’s line-up steadily increasing in numbers. Along with the other two band members Simone and John, I have found them to be some of the most down-to-earth, genuine, friendly and sociable musicians I have ever met.

I would highly recommend getting down to a live Head Of Light Entertainment performance and staring at the band as they perform, even if it does mean travelling down to the land that time forgot and that’s Ed Zachary where you can catch them this month. Firstly, they perform at Sunderland’s Bar One on Thursday 20^th September and secondly, the following week on Thursday 27^th September, Head Of Light Entertainment will play at The Ivy House Pub in Sunderland.

I’d also urge you to invest in their two albums I Am Liberated and The English Don’t Care, the second of which may be the most expertly crafted work of art the region has produced since John Martin’s painting The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

A Mallaz Announcement!

And So, The Mallaz Era Begins…

I’m here to make an announcement, well a couple of announcements actually. Due to hosting issues with my webhost, I’m back temporarily using this old blog for my witterings and gobshite ramblings until I get Mallaz.co.uk up and running fully armed and operational. Also, I may seem less vocal of late but I can confirm that I’ve been doing a lot of work behind the scenes both in preparation for Mallaz.co.uk and other Mallaz Empire related projects that are in their early phases. So just watch this fukkin space!

Disclaimer

The very first point that I need to make is my disclaimer. You know of me by now and you know I speak my mind, no holds barred. Whether you like it or not, I couldn’t give two shits! I do what I do and it’s served me well so far. However, recent developments mean that Mallaz is no longer just an entity or one man working alone. Progress has been made and further negotiations are underway to expand The Mallaz Entity into The Mallaz Empire.

Mallaz presents… BiG BEAT BRONSON (Exclusive & Intimate)

I may quite possibly have landed the mother of all intimate live music events in North East history!

Very recently local music heavyweights Baron Von Alias, MistaBreeze, Eliza Lawson & DJ Lkp combined their various talents to form BiG BEAT BRONSON. They debuted under the new guise at Mallaz presents… BiG BEAT BRONSON at The Cluny 2 on 7^th July.

Following on from that incredible introductory showcase, the BiG BEAT BRONSON tribe released the much anticipated ‘May Contain Nuts’ EP in the first week of August and ‘May Contain Nuts’ proved to be well worth the wait, receiving several impressive reviews and much radio play.

A couple of weeks later came the ‘May Contain Nuts’ EP Launch Party at the highly-acclaimed O2 Academy 2 in Newcastle which, despite it’s relatively grand capacity, BiG BEAT BRONSON almost single-handedly sold out the O2 Academy 2 on their own merit. That’s no mean feat. The Academy 2 holds just shy of 400 people and BiG BEAT BRONSON are a group who are growing in magnitude and selling out any local venue that you put them in.

So now you’re wondering is how in the hell I have managed to swing a gig where the rapidly rising BiG BEAT BRONSON will play a highly exclusive and intimate gig in a venue that holds a mere 100 people?

Well, those of you who know of my work will know that I have been banging the drum for the BiG BEAT BRONSON cause since The Baron & Breeze days and can even make the claim that I am one of their most vocal supporters. I even list Steesh (the producer and brains behind Baron Von Alias and therefore BiG BEAT BRONSON) as one of my biggest musical inspirations, having learnt a lot through conversations with the man I claim to be a modern day genius! The confidence in their ability and the thought that they put into each and every live performance is second to none, yet it is in no way overshadowed by any form of arrogance as they manage to remain more humble than most musicians despite being Newcastle’s hottest musical product at the minute and having more right to brag and boast than any local act.

Many BiG BEAT BRONSON fans who decided to put off buying tickets for the EP launch at the O2 Academy found tickets difficult to acquire during the build up to the event and should hopefully have learnt from that experience that tickets are invented for a reason. That was a venue holding almost 400% more capacity than this intimate event at The Bridge Hotel and due to the limited capacity, yet another sell-out is expected.

In basic terms, BiG BEAT BRONSON will sell out venues with ease and for this event, being held at The Bridge Hotel, tickets are in very limited supply. Buy now, not five minutes time, not next week, not “oh I’ll do it soon”. This is BiG BEAT BRONSON performing at an intimate venue with only a handful of available tickets, IT WILL SELL OUT. Don’t get left behind crying that there’s no tickets left, this is your opportunity to ensure you don’t miss out.

It took a lot of extensive negotiations and more activity in the favour exchange market than Chelsea FC during a transfer window to book this highly-reputed and soon to be constantly in demand act. BiG BEAT BRONSON will fill any room in which they play and The Bridge Hotel is a venue that has to feel privileged to be hosting an event with the saviours of Newcastle’s music scene.

Mallaz Music Management

The Mallaz Entity is currently expanding into an empire with its latest addition, Mallaz Music Management, being added to my constantly growing portfolio; including where it all began in art with Horrorshow Artwork and my live music events extension of The Mallaz Entity, Mallaz presents…, which ironically has begun to flourish since the demise of Order 66’s monthly nights of live music at The Telegraph.

This latest extension of The Mallaz Entity, the Mallaz Music Management division has been added to the empire due to being recruited as manager and promoter of Gingersnap & The Style Pile.

 Gingersnap & The Style Pile are now the third band that I have managed and/or promoted, however they are the first to show enough talent and promise to warrant an all out promotional push and have the ability to make it bigger than the two previous failed bands that I have managed.

The first band I managed, Casino, folded due to their singer Richard cancelling their last two ever scheduled gigs. Richard was also brought in by Ben, who along with me co-founded Downtown Lester Brown, a band unheard of since my departure which again was mostly down to Richard and his unwarranted god complex after playing a small venue in front of thirty-odd paying customers. Despite his ego-driven superstar status, Richard the Musical Rapist has failed to achieve any level of success in music within ten years of being in and/or ruining bands.

On the other hand, Gingersnap & The Style Pile are a unique product that I had dubbed “Newcastle’s Ultimate Party Band” even long before being asked to become involved with them. Their quirky fusion of Funk, Ska and Reggae complete with Dan on the Sax and Cool Eddie on Bass as well as Gingersnap herself, Joanne, on vocals with her distinctive voice and beautiful red hair (gingers have the same effect on me as Kryptonite does on Superman), the First Dan on Drums and my pal Hal on the Guitar. The Style Pile are looking to extend their tribe and add a tromboner as well as the odd occasions where I join the band on stage and play Air Guitar, although we did have issues with a snapped string and feedback from said Air Guitar when Gingersnap & The Style Pile performed a supporting slot at Mallaz presents… Head Of Light Entertainment at The Cluny 2.

My first job as the curator of the funkadelic nature in Gingersnap & The Style Pile is boosting their profile, acquiring supporting slots and arranging live events. As well as pushing them to have at minimum an EP recorded and ready for pushing in the very near future. Tonight at The Cluny 2, Newcastle I bring you Teesside’s finest Alt-Pop act Head Of Light Entertainment plus support from three exceptional local acts.

Head Of Light Entertainment come up from Teesside to headline tonight’s event debuting their brand new drummer in their first outing as a four-piece. Already an exceptional band before their latest addition, this performance promises to be a historic gig n the history of Head Of Light Entertainment, who have already build a highly credible reputation on Teesside and seek to expand their reach further afield and earn the recognition they deserve.

Washington-based acoustic comedy pairing Awkward Weed have been likened a local version of Flight of the Concords and certainly made waves and instigated uncontrollable bouts of laughter during their performances at my Order 66 live music events. Now under the management by yours truly, that’s me (Mallaz) in case you’re unfamiliar with that phrase, Gingersnap & The Style Pile have performed events for me on several occasions since I discovered them at The Bridge Hotel just before Christmas and dubbed them ‘Newcastle’s Ultimate Party Band’ due to their funky sound and the upbeat vide they create with each and every performance. In recent times they have performed at Newcastle’s Community Green Festival on the main stage and supported the legendary BiG BEAT BRONSON in July at Mallaz presents… BiG BEAT BRONSON, BBB’s first live performance under their new name, a gig that all but sold out.  Gingersnap & The Style Pile will also debut a new member with Dan replacing Andy in their wind section. Expect Funky sounds and dancing crowds as standard with The Style Pile.

Last but not least by any means, South Tyneside-based People Making Noises will be not only debuting a new band member but will be gracing the stage as a group for the very first time. Having heard their recordings and being impressed I had no qualms recruiting them for this event and providing them with this opportunity. However due to never actually seeing them perform live, People Making Noises could be classed as tonight’s wildcard and in my opinion, you should always keep an open mind to new music.

The Face of Insanity

It has recently been brought to my attention that I have been ignoring my artwork and haven’t given it any publicity in fukkin ages.  But to be fair, I don’t really spend a lot of time on the artwork these days.  Mostly, I am concentrating on music and writing but I’ve had a few people asking questions about the art so I might as well humour them.

If you are unfamiliar with the art element of my work, I created my own brand of artwork called ‘Horrorshow Artwork‘.  I have created several Horrorshow works, the latest one was ‘Monsters‘, which I finished in October.

And it’s not just the twisted, abstract Horrorshow stuff that I do.  I created all the artwork for Downtown Lester Brown too, before I left them to their own devices.  The most significant works I created for that project were obviously the logo and EP cover for ‘Love & Other Diseases‘.

I also created artwork for each of the tracks on the EP, my personal favourites being the artwork for ‘Man On The Run‘ and the ‘Empty Heed‘ single.  However, due to me owning all of the copyright to my artwork, Downtown Lester Brown are no longer able to use any of it other than for the Love & Other Diseases EP.  And since Richard Gilroy tried to pilfer all my credit for setting up DLB, I have taken precautions to make sure that if they do breach my copyright I will get what I deserve from it.

My latest drawing was actually the artwork that I created for the gig that was due to be held at The Blue Bunny Cafe on 7th January.  Unfortunately that gig, as mentioned, was cancelled but here’s the drawing I did for it.

MY NEXT GIG – FRIDAY 3RD FEBRUARY at THE TELEGRAPH

Due to the cancellation of tomorrow’s Blue Bunny gig, my next event is now Friday 3rd February at The Telegraph, Orchard Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Entry for this event, which starts at 8pm, is priced at a mere £3 and is payable on the door.

For that £3, you get to witness three live acts, plus a DJ set.

First up there’s off-beat Alternative act, Artisam.  They’ve played for me before, at my last Telegraph gig, and were very well received.  They are a band I’m extremely fond of and went to see them play the Tangerine Christmas gig at The Bridge in December.

Following Artisam, there’ll be a DubStep DJ set from Sublevel2‘s very own l87 to warm you up for the next act, Hip Hop duo Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze.  The Baron and Breeze are a class act, they played the BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in the summer.  I recommended them in one of my previous music blogs and also reviewed their track ‘Action Man‘.

And to top off the evening I’ve got the up-and-coming Alternative Rock band The Stroll, from Durham.  Another act I’m very keen on and also recommended in the same blog as I recommended the Baron.

It’s gonna be a fukkin epic night so make sure you get down for it!
