He Scores When He Wants!

I’ve been a busy little bastard over the Easter weekend.  On Good Friday I was in Stockton with Honey Chrome at The Sun Inn for a gig by The Skank Sinatra & Friends Show, also featuring Dressed Like Wolves.  Unfortunately that meant that I missed the Swansea v Newcastle game on the telly.  On the Saturday it was The Egg at The Telegraph, my gig and also my celebrations for my 28th birthday which was on the Wednesday.  Sunday was my chill-out day and then the Newcastle v Bolton game at St. James’ Park yesterday.

I’m gonna work my way backwards and start by writing a bit about the Bolton game followed by The Egg then the Sun Inn gig. Then I’ll probably have a little prattle on about some of my upcoming events.  I mean, why the hell not?

NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-0 BOLTON WANDERERS

Before yesterday’s game at St. James’ Park there were people on Facebook and Twitter predicting Newcastle would win 4 or 5-0.  I never fancied it being a walk in the park.  Before the match I said to Mark ( @Mark2606 ) on Twitter that I thought it would be 2-0, with Papiss Cisse to score the first goal.  I even bet on it, it was 20/1 with Paddy Power.

The first half was tight and neither side really got a foothold on the game or created any clear cut chances.  Papiss Cisse did show some of his quality on the ball and his first touch was impeccable.  Davide Santon showed some signs of improvement in the first half and did well getting forward but we lacked any end product in a difficult first-half, with the play mainly in a congested midfield.  James Perch again had a solid first half and didn’t put a foot wrong.  Yohan Cabaye on the other hand failed to impress and his set-piece play was woeful.  Bolton proved hard to break down in the first 45 minutes and it was goalless at half-time.

Bolton started the second half well and Tim Krul was forced into making a good save from Chris Eagles within five minutes of the restart.  We also had another scare shortly after that when Martin Petrov played a very dangerous ball across our goal, which fortunately Darren Pratley was unable to reach at the back post.

With just over twenty minutes left Hatem Ben Arfa curled a free-kick narrowly wide after Nigel Reo-Coker was booked for a foul on Yohan Cabaye.  Then in the 73rd minute Ben Arfa, obviously finding the 0-0 score-line a bit boring, just decided he’d score.  He picked the ball up in our half and, with an amazing run; he skinned three Bolton players before coolly slotting his shot past Adam Bogdan to make it 1-0.  It was an excellent solo goal by the Frenchman and we were going mental!

He scores when he wants and in the 83rd minute Papiss Cisse decided to add his name to the score-sheet.  Shola Ameobi easily beat Tim Ream and played a perfect pass for Cisse to tap home and put the game out of reach for Bolton.  2-0 to The Toon, making it five consecutive wins and leaving us in fifth place, tied on points with Tottenham Hotspur in fourth place.

Other results in yesterday’s matches have left Newcastle in with a serious shout for Champions’ League football next season, with only five games left this term.  Tottenham lost 2-1 at home to Norwich and Chelsea dropped two points in their 1-1 draw away to Fulham.  Plus Everton trounced Sunderland with a 4-0 win.  It’s always good when the Mackems get hammered!

Mathematically, either four more points or if Everton drop a single point within the next five games we’re guaranteed at least sixth place.  If Liverpool beat Everton in the FA Cup Semi-Final on Saturday then we’re pretty much guaranteed European football next season, NICE!

THE EGG

The name for my gig at The Telegraph on Saturday night wasn’t really Easter related; in fact I named it after The Egg-Man@EggusMaximus ) on Twitter and also the Happy Mondays song of the same name.  The Egg was also my birthday celebration and I was serenaded with Happy Birthday by the awesome Eliza Lawson (that rhymes!) and also Brotha Priah gave me his unique twist on Happy Birthday.  I’d like to thank both of them for that as it really topped off a great night for me.

The Egg was also the largest attendance I have had at a gig so far, improving on the attendance from my last event in March, also at The Telegraph.  I’ve had some really positive feedback about the atmosphere from the artists involved and also some of the people who attended.  I also received some good feedback on my selection of the artists, most notably Parastatic, who most of us had never seen perform live before and were really well received by the audience.  After the relative success of my last two events, (The Telegraph was rammed on Saturday night) I have decided that it’s time to look into securing a larger venue.

I had a last minute change of sound engineer and Sound-Guy Dave did the duty this time.  There were some technical difficulties on the opening set and unfortunately the sound was a bit too quiet for Baiqian Jiang’s acoustic set that kicked off the night.  On the other hand, Baiqian’s performance was flawless.  His fingerstyle guitar work is beautiful, well composed mellow music and a nice start to the evening.  I really recommend listening to Baiqian Jiang’s music on Soundcloud, so here’s a link for that;

Baiqian Jiang on Soundcloud

Following Baiqian were Artisam, one of my favourite bands to work with.  I’ve worked with Artisam on several occasions and each time they have delivered a unique performance.  This time it was the debut of two new members, Laurie on electric violin and the new drummer Kieran.  Artisam even switched it up mid set with Kieran and Cam swapping drums for bass for a couple songs.  As always Artisam were entertaining and really contributed to the atmosphere of the night.  Check them out on Facebook;

Artisam are also gonna be performing at my event at The Bridge Hotel in Newcastle on May 19th.  I’ll get around to that later on, but in the meantime here’s the link to the Facebook event for that.

The Troll at The Bridge

The third act to perform at The Egg was Parastatic.  As I mentioned before, Parastatic went down a storm and impressed a lot of people there.  Their Krautedelic Electro Fuzz is brilliant and set a dancey tone to the night.  They also added an extra element to the night with strobe lights and visual projections on the wall.  You need to have a listen to Parastatic because quite frankly, they’re class!

Parastatic on Facebook

The Egg was the first time I’d worked with Parastatic and I would highly recommend them to other promoters.  They were totally professional and a pleasure to work with, as well as their music being shit hot!

The last live band to play was Ginger Snap & The Style Pile.  This was the second time I’ve worked with them after they played at my March event at The Telegraph.  I’ve loved ginger Snap & The Style Pile since I first saw them play live in December and believe they are Newcastle’s Ultimate Party Band.  As always, they had the audience dancing and played a top quality set.  Check them out on Facebook.

Ginger Snap & The Style Pile on Facebook

The live bands were followed by some Comic Book Hip Hop from Baron Von Alias, MistaBreeze and Eliza Lawson, another act I was working with for the second time.  I’ve become a huge fan of these since they were recommended to me by Spark FM’s Nathan Wood ( @NathanWould ) and ‘Get Wild, Gan Mental’ has practically been adopted as my theme tune, since I slated it on Twitter after Nathan recommended it to me and I’m usually invited on stage to do the dance with them.

Baron, Breeze and Eliza never fail to entertain and The Egg was no exception.  They performed tracks from the recently released ‘Brace For The Impact’ EP as well as tracks from the forthcoming ‘May Contain Nuts’ EP.  Download ‘Brace For The Impact’ and watch the epic video for ‘Impact’ on the following links;

Brace For The Impact

Impact (video)

I was a fun-filled, entertaining set, as I’ve come to expect from Baron, Breeze and Eliza and, despite it being a bit embarrassing, it made my day when Eliza sang Happy Birthday to me.  Like their pages on Facebook on the following links;

Eliza Lawson on Facebook

Baron Von Alias, MistaBreeze and Eliza Lawson are also performing live tomorrow night.  They will be at Official Destiny Nightclub for Rex Regis’ album launch party, which is free entry all night so get yourselves down to that.  Details of that event can be found on Facebook on the following link.

Rex Regis: Faithful album launch

The Hip Hop was followed by Brotha Priah, who totally blew people away.  For the majority of the people there, it was their first time seeing Priah in action and what he does in amazing.  Even during his sound-check, which seemed to take no time at all for such a technological act, there were looks of awe on people’s faces.  Priah beat-boxes and using a looping station and a Kaosspad creates tracks using only the sounds he makes himself.  It’s unbelievable stuff and oozes individuality.  He also performed a rendition of Happy Birthday for me, with his own unique twist.  It was fukkin awesome and he played an epic set!

His next live performance will be at The Warehouse Party, at Dynamix Skate Park in Gateshead, on Saturday 28th April.  Pre-event tickets are only £5 and can be purchased at; http://www.wegottickets.com/event/162802

For more details of that event, which also features Baron Von Alias, MistaBreeze and Eliza Lawson, check out the Facebook event on the next link.

SubLevel2 & Milk The Cow present: The Warehouse Party

To round up the night we had a DJ set performed by Greenline DJ, his debut under that name as he is also Dj Id.  His selection of music seemed to be well received and was a fitting end to the night.  Greenline DJ also took care of the music in between each of the artists’ sets and tied the night together nicely.  As well as rocking a new name, he was also sporting a new design in his facial hair and resembled V from V for Vendetta.

Check out Greenline DJ’s Facebook page on this link;

From the feedback I have received so far, and there has been quite a bit, The Egg was a very good night and people really seemed to have enjoyed it.  The attendance was the best I have had so far too, making it the most successful event I have run to date.

Unfortunately I still don’t have any of the photographs or videos of The Egg though from David Johnston Photography yet, but will get the photos uploaded onto Facebook and videos onto YouTube as soon as I do.

Honey Chrome

HONEY CHROME at THE SUN INN

On Good Friday I was in Stockton on Tees, at The Sun Inn, to see Honey Chrome perform.  Their drummer, Stevie, gave me a lift to and from the venue, which is massively appreciated.

This was the second time I’ve seen Honey Chrome after they performed at my March event at The Telegraph.  This gig was free entry, so you can’t grumble at the price.  Also performing at The Sun Inn were Dressed Like Wolves and the headline act, The Skank Sinatra & Friends Show.  It’s a really small venue so it was a pretty intimate environment and despite being busy, there were only really a handful of people there.

Honey Chrome performed the opening set and played brilliantly.  I was particularly impressed by mR mATTIAS’ vocals on ‘Mind Machine’, which had more of a Punk vibe to them than the recorded version on their website – http://www.honeychrome.co.uk/

I am now also of the belief that Dan may possibly be one of the most technically gifted guitarists I have ever seen live.  The fingers he hasn’t severed off in Karma-balancing, chainsaw-related incidents were going ten-to-the-dozen throughout their set.  I also find their use of samples, especially at the beginning and end of tracks, very interesting.  Unfortunately Honey Chrome’s Psychedelic Ambient Punk-Metal seemed to be wasted on what was predominantly an Indie crowd.

Check out Honey Chrome on Facebook on the following link.

Honey Chrome on Facebook

Dressed Like Wolves followed Honey Chrome and they were as Indie as they come, which appealed to the audience but unfortunately not to me.  Their effeminately-voiced vocalist didn’t cut any ground with his lyrics and the band’s sound was nothing I haven’t heard before.  Dressed Like Wolves just seemed a bit flat to me and really lack any sort of edge.  It was simply just typical, whiny, generic Indie stuff.  If you want to, check them out on Facebook.

Dressed Like Wolves on Facebook

The headline band, The Skank Sinatra & Friends Show, did seem pretty interesting.  The Skank Sinatra & Friends Show perform Punk covers of old Swing music such and also Disney songs.  We only managed to catch the very start of their set as Honey Chrome had to leave to get back to their obscure and widespread dwellings in mythical places, and obviously Stevie was my lift.  If you’d like to check out some stuff by The Skank Sinatra & Friends Show, you can find them on Facebook on the next link.

Honey Chrome are next performing live at Trillians Rock Bar in Newcastle on Wednesday 23rd April.  That event is a Battle of the Bands Semi-Final.  Keep updated for that, and future live performances, on their website or Facebook page.  They’re also booked to play two gigs for me in May, but I’ll get on to that next.

SOME RAMBLINGS ABOUT MUSIC + NUMPTIES IN THE NEWS

God made it easy on me...

You Beastly Bastard!

Wednesday was my birthday.  I fukkin hate my birthday but a new bucket hat and a Happy Mondays ticket, for the O2 Academy in Newcastle on May 4th, helped to ease the blow.  As also did Swede Mason, who released another video onto YouTube on my birthday.  Check out Swede Mason’s YouTube channel on this link and subscribe for future releases.

Swede Mason on YouTube

Swede Mason’s new track is titled ‘Well bugger to you, you Beastly Bastard’ and is totally typical of Swede Mason.  More video sampled and cut into a new video with added beats to create an incredible audio-visual collage.  While ‘Well bugger to you, you Beastly Bastard’ may not be Swede Mason’s greatest work his genius is unrivalled.  It is still a truly epic work, however in my opinion not as brilliant as ‘Jeremy Clarkson’s Beatbox’ or ‘Bill Wyman’s Metal Detector’ to name but a few.

Apparently, according to Clair, the video for this track is taken from The King’s Speech or something.  I’ve never heard of it or seen it, but then I’m not Ed Zachary a film buff.

Well Bugger to you, you Beastly Bastard’ is vulgar, repetitive and really quite childish, yet it is amusing, entertaining and quite frankly fukkin fantastic!

Check out Swede Mason latest work on the link below.

Some Recommendations

While I’m on the subject of music, I may as well drop a couple of recommendations.

BROTHA PRIAH

I’ll start with Brotha Priah, another musician who does something a bit different.  Priah is a massively underrated artist who is starting the make an impression on the North East music scene and has the potential and drive to go a long way.

Brotha Priah uses a Boss RC-300 looping station and a Kaosspad to build up tracks on the spot.  What makes it all the more impressive however is that Priah makes all of the sounds with his voice, beat-boxing beats, harmonies and bass-lines and looping them to create unique tracks.  He has an exceptional talent and is extremely passionate about music.  Priah explains it better than me, so click on the following link for a video of Priah explaining how he does what he does.

Brotha Priah – Boss RC-300 + Kaosspad 3 Intro

Don’t forget to subscribe to Brotha Priah’s YouTube channel.

Brotha Priah on YouTube

I first noticed Brotha Priah when I seen him performing at SubLevel2 at The Head of Steam a while back.  He was one of the artists the particularly stood out that night, in amongst local Hip Hop heavyweights Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze and Rick Fury.  Read my take on that night on this link;

https://mallazmalcolmwhite.wordpress.com/2012/02/11/whats-normal-is-normally-boring/

As I mentioned, Priah is starting to build his reputation on the North East music scene, particularly with the Hip Hop, DubStep and Drum n Bass crowds and is quickly becoming one of the usual suspects at live events in the region.  With a few live performances coming up in April, including Rex Regis’ album launch, on 11th, and The Warehouse Party, on 28th, Priah is starting to make his mark.

He’s also performing at my gig, The Egg at The Telegraph, Orchard Street, Newcastle on Saturday.  Click the next links for more information on The Egg.

HONEY CHROME

Whilst on the theme of artists with individuality, my next recommendation is a band so unique that they don’t fit inside any standard genre classification.

Honey Chrome’s sound is a marvellous mash-up of many genres, with many different influences.  Not only do Honey Chrome differ from every other band, each of their tracks differs in style and sound from each other.

With Honey Chrome there’s synthetic bass, heavy drums, rocking guitars and distorted vocals aplenty.  Call it whatever you want, there’s a bit of everything in there.  You’ll notice influences from many different artists within Honey Chrome’s sound and they bring it all together in a brilliantly orchestrated fusion.  The effects are truly profound.

Honey Chrome

I think my favourite Honey Chrome tracks so far are ‘I Think I Luv U’ and ‘Fractured Days’.  As afore mentioned, Honey Chrome’s style and sound changes between tracks and those two are more mellow and more suited to my tastes than the heavier ‘Mind Machine’, which would have plenty of appeal with Rock and Heavy Metal fans.

Honey Chrome are playing in Stockton on Tees tonight at The Sun Inn along with The Skank Sinatra & Friends Show and Dressed Like Wolves.  Doors open at 7.30pm, find further details of that on this link;

http://www.facebook.com/events/416819888335204/

I have also got Honey Chrome booked to perform at two events for me in May.  They will be playing at The Telegraph on Friday 4th May and at The Troll at The Bridge, at The Bridge Hotel in Newcastle on Saturday 19th May.  Check out the video of Honey Chrome performing live at The Telegraph at my gig in March on this next link.

Honey Chrome – I Think I Luv U (live at The Telegraph)

Details of the May 4th gig at The Telegraph are still to be confirmed.

The Troll at The Bridge on Saturday 19th May is being held at The Bridge Hotel, Castle Garth, Newcastle upon Tyne.  Entry is £3 payable on door.  Doors open at 7.30pm and the event will run until 11pm.  Also performing that night will be local Indie Pop sensation Emergency Door Release, the ever-impressive Alternative act Artisam and Funk-Rock band Downtown Lester Brown.

THE EGG

After what feels like a lifetime in waiting, it’s almost finally here. Tomorrow night at The Telegraph on Orchard Street, behind Newcastle’s Central Station is The Egg!

The Egg is a night of live music and a whole new experience.  A culmination of artists from across a wide range of genres, The Egg offers something for every musical taste.  There’s the notorious Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze with the awesome Eliza Lawson delivering North East Hip Hop with a comic book twist.  Another of the main highlights are the epically vibrant Funky Ska band Ginger Snap & The Style Pile giving you something to dance to.  Artisam, who are also performing The Troll at The Bridge, will be performing as a five-piece for the first time after the addition of their new drummer and fiddler.  We’ll also have some Krautedelic Electro Fuzz from Parastatic, something I’m really looking forward to seeing live.  As mentioned earlier there’ll also be a live Beat-Boxing performance by the up-and-coming Brotha Priah with his looping station and Kaosspad.  There’s also some acoustic brilliance in the form of Baiqian Jiang and his fingerstyle and a DJ set from Greenline DJ, also known as Dj Id.

Seven different artists on a night that runs til 2am for a paltry £4 is a steal!

Doors open at 7.30pm and the £4 entry is payable on the door.

Further information about The Egg can be found on my blog, along with links to each artist, or on the Facebook on the two links below.

And now some shit in the news that made me laugh…

I was on Twitter yesterday morning and my timeline was flooded with shit about Samantha Brick, she was also trending.

Now I’d never heard of her and I’m a naturally inquisitive bastard.  So I looked and up, and here’s the jist of what her crack is…

Samantha Brick is some random, moderately attractive, middle-aged blonde writer from The Daily Mail, who wrote an article earlier this week whining on about how difficult life is being beautiful.

Here’s a link to the article, have a gander;

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2124246/Samantha-Brick-downsides-looking-pretty-Why-women-hate-beautiful.html

Throughout the article this self-obsessed woman bemoans the strains that her supposed beauty causes her, from bitchy bosses to jealous girlfriends.  She claims that women hate her for no other reason but her “lovely looks.

Samantha Brick’s arrogance and up-your-own-arsery become glaringly apparent with this quote from the article, “Unfortunately women find nothing more annoying than someone else being the most attractive girl in a room.”  Pretty full of herself for someone who claims has many clients who are models, and also doing well on casting gender stereotypes.  She also claims to be “tall, slim, blonde” and often told that she is “good-looking”.

I don’t know about slim though flower… I see a bit of a pot-belly thing going on there.  Have a look at the photos and see if you agree.  She’s also got quite chunky, stumpy looking legs.  To claim she’s “slim” is slightly hopeful.  She’s not in terrible shape for a middle-aged woman of forty-one, but she’s not shaped like Gwen Stefani or Elizabeth Hurley!

As I said before, she’s only moderately good-looking.  In my opinion she’s got a dodgy-looking nose and a freaky, weird smile.  She’s got kind of a Miss Piggy-like face.

At the end of the article she claims to be “probably one of very few women entering their fifth decade welcoming the decline of my looks.”  A statement that seemingly contradicts herself as earlier in the article she stated she works at her appearance.  She works out, doesn’t drink or smoke and rarely eats chocolate.  Not really the actions of a woman in her early forties welcoming the decline of her looks is it?

I’m not even gonna touch that her husband is a Frenchman and wearing soldier clobber in the photos, that’s too easy.

Samantha Brick is a deluded, self-obsessed attention-seeker and I’m bewildered as to why a newspaper would publish such nonsensical bull-shit written to solely to pander the author’s ego.  I mean, that’s not fukkin news is it???

And as if that twaddle wasn’t ridiculous enough for you, the backlash from Samantha Brick spawned another article, this time by Tim Dowling for The Guardian.  You can read that on this next link.

http://m.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2012/apr/04/samantha-brick-hated-good-looks?cat=lifeandstyle&type=article

This is yet another prime example of up-your-own-arsery by a self-obsessed, egotistical twat.  Tim Dowling claims that men envy him for his looks.  In my experience most men couldn’t give two shits about how another man looks, the competitive element lies in other things, like sports for example.

I think anyone who uses phrases such as “brooding”, “chiselled jaw” and “soulful, beseeching eyes” to describe themselves appears to be either a purely pretentious cunt or pitching themselves on a lonely hearts dating website.

Tim Dowling prattles on that if you’re a man you probably find him a threat.  One statement that stood out for me was, “I can’t tell you how many male acquaintance shave stopped speaking to me over the years for petty reasons (unpaid debts, being alleged source of unpleasant rumour, refusal to appear as character witness), when jealousy is the transparent cause.

Yeah, sure people start to lose patience and you will fall foul of people if you don’t pay your debts.  As for refusing to be a character witness for a friend, either the friend is a complete scum-bag of Tim Dowling blatantly refused to help a friend in need.  I wonder if the reference was for a job or for court, as he fails to mention any specifics.  Either way it’s pretty shitty and I wouldn’t be best impressed if a so-called mate refused to help where they could in such situations, unless of course it was a seriously bad crime.

He claims also to know exactly how many men have been angered enough by his face to want to punch it.  For some reason I suspect it may be his arrogant, pretentious, self-absorbed attitude that makes people want to smash his fukkin face in, rather than how his face looks.

There is also no mention of Tim Dowling having a partner within the article.  I suspect this is also related to him being a Grade-A plum!

GIGS GOING ON IN APRIL

Here’s a guide to what’s going on in music in April.

THE EGG

I’m obviously gonna start off with my gig, The Egg at The Telegraph on Orchard Street in Newcastle upon Tyne.  The Egg is held in The Telegraph’s function room upstairs on Saturday 7th April and entry is charged at £4 on the door.  The Egg is night of live music featuring incredibly talented artists from a wide range of genres.  The doors open at 7.30pm and the event will be running from 8pm until 2am on Easter Sunday.

The main highlights of the evening with be live Hip Hop from Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze, featuring Eliza Lawson, who earlier this week released their ‘Brace For The Impact’ EP.  Download that now, while it’s free, because on Monday it get’s released on to iTunes and the likes and you’ll have to pay for it.  There’s also some Funky Ska in the form of Ginger Snap & The Style Pile, who performed a truly epic set at my last gig at The Telegraph earlier this month.  I’ve also got something totally fresh and individual for you in the form of Brotha Priah.  What Priah does is live Beat-Boxing through a looping station to create songs on the spot while he talks shite over the top.  That’s something you don’t see every day and the lad does it with incredible skill.

Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze – Brace For The Impact (review)

If those three acts aren’t enough to tempt you, I’ve also got Alternative act Artisam playing as a five-piece with their new drummer and fiddler.  There’s some Electronic Krautedelic Pop from Parastatic, a DJ set from Greenline DJ and Baiqian Jiang will be showing off his Fingerstyle on his acoustic guitar.

For more information on The Egg you can click one of the two links below for my event blog or the Facebook event.

SUBLEVEL 2

SubLevel2 and the 12KW Defcon1 Soundsystem have got a couple things going on in April too.

If you find yourself north of the border, then on Saturday 21st April you may wanna go check out Defcon1 Soundsystem + SubLevel2 UK at Hawick & Wilton Cricket Club, for a night of DubStep, Breaks and Drum n Bass complete with smoke, lasers and a visual show.

The Hawick event will feature DJ sets from regular SubLevel2 DJs; Pegz, S9T, L87 and Blackleaf and for only £4 it’s a bargain.  Check out the Facebook event on this next link.

http://www.facebook.com/events/329954643727842/

If that one’s too far off your beaten track, you need not worry because on Saturday 28th April SubLevel2 and Milk the Cow present The Warehouse Party at Dynamix Skate Park in Gateshead.

The Warehouse Party has a massive line-up.  The live acts include Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze, Rick Fury and Brotha Priah amongst others and the DJs include the SubLevel2 crew and many more.  This one is not to be missed.  Pre-event tickets can be bought at Beatdown Records or online on the following link, for only £5.

That’s shaping up to be an epic night and I’ll be on that like a fat lass on a buffet!

Possibly the most original live band in the region (I’m just saying, you’ve not heard shit like this before!) are Honey Chrome.  This two and a half man band don’t just sound different from everybody else, even their own tracks sound different to one another.  I’ve got Honey Chrome booked for a couple of gigs in May but they also have a couple in April too.

On Friday 6th April, the day before The Egg, they are playing with The Skank Sinatra & Friends Show and The Kites, at The Sun Inn in Stockton on Tees.  You can find further details on the Facebook event for that gig on the link below.

Then on Wednesday 25th April, Honey Chrome are competing in the Semi Final of a Battle of the Bands competition at Trillians Rock Bar in Newcastle.  I don’t have the details for that so keep up to date with things on Honey Chrome’s website on the link below.

Saturday night’s gig at The Telegraph (3rd March) was awesome and I’ve had some great feedback from everyone involved and people who attended.  It was a historical night on several counts too.  It was the first event that I have run so far to turn a profit and for the first time I was actually able to pay the bands, not a great deal admittedly, but anything is better than nothing.  It was also the first time the massively underrated Honey Chrome were paid for a performance and they were very well received by the majority of the crowd.  Emergency Door Release also added their own bit of history to the evening and done me the honour of choosing this gig to launch their debut EP ‘Who Are We?’  So I suppose I’ll return the favour and start off with them.

James Rooney of Emergency Door Release... Boom!

Emergency Door Release

As afore mentioned, Emergency Door Release used Saturday’s gig as their debut EP launch, giving out free copies of ‘Who Are We?’ to anyone who wanted one.  I got mine, so if you missed out… unlucky!

Who Are We? – EP Review Blog

Who Are We?’ was certainly launched in style as Emergency Door Release played with an energetic passion and enthusiasm.  Vocalist James Rooney was certainly enjoying himself, which was evident from his relentless dancing about on our make-shift stage, and the sweat that was visibly dripping from him by the end of the set.  The whole band play with an unbelievable momentum and are highly entertaining to see perform live.

Self-described as an “Indie Pop Rock” band, Emergency Door Release are a far cry from some of the whiny generic and repugnantly ignorant and arrogant bands that I played with during my time in my old band at Too Far North gigs.  Emergency Door Release are a sociable bunch of lads and participated with the banter and the vibe that the night had.

They performed all four tracks from their EP with professional precision during their set and were thoroughly entertaining.  An amazing set involving confetti and sacks full of fun was brought to an end with the title track from ‘Who Are We?’ which, in my opinion, is their strongest track.  Strongest track so far, that is, because Emergency Door Release have the talent and drive to go from strength to strength.  The enjoyment they take from what they’re doing is obvious for all to see and their confidence in their ability is perfectly balanced by their humility.  For Emergency Door Release it’s all about playing music and having fun!

Rockin with Rooney!

Emergency Door Release’s next live performance is on Saturday 17th March, St. Patrick’s Day.  They’re playing Lionfest at The Golden Lion in Jarrow, South Tyneside.  I wasn’t informed of this until I’d published my March Gig Guide, but eight bands spread over nine hours and plenty of Guinness sure sounds good to me.  Check it out on the Facebook event on this link; http://www.facebook.com/events/101350036661929/?ref=ts

I’ve also got Emergency Door Release book to perform for me again on Saturday 19th May at The Bridge Hotel on Castle Square in Newcastle.  I’m looking forward to working with them again and more details of this event will follow in the near future.

Honey Chrome

Honey Chrome

The surprise package of the evening was undoubtedly Honey Chrome.  This two and a half man band (guitarist /angry Buddhist Dan is relentlessly amputating pieces of his body in his own twisted sense of Karma) have enough super-advanced technological equipment to give NASA the gadget version of penis envy and they used that equipment to open the gig with an unexpected bang and introduced us to their “madness”.  What Honey Chrome do is use their advanced alien technology to channel transmissions from another galaxy and then play you the national anthems from countries on a foreign planet at very loud volume!

Honey Chrome – I Think I Luv U

Honey Chrome are an underrated act who are often overlooked by promoters due to the fact that they cannot be defined by any particular genre of music.  Why the narrowness of mind though?  How do you know you don’t like something if you’ve never tried it before?  It is this individuality and their unique sound that I recruited them for!

As soon as they kicked off the night I was receiving positive feedback a good cross-section of the people there.  Sound-Guy Rob was particularly impressed, as were the other bands and admittedly, I was also blown away!  Even I never expected Honey Chrome to serve up something of that magnitude!

Despite, or maybe because of, the fact that these lads are crazier than a sack of rabid ferrets, they totally get the vision behind everything I am trying to do with music and how things need to be shaken up.  Honey Chrome will not be put into any genre box, there’s not one that will accept them.  It doesn’t have to make sense, but it does sound fukkin good!

Look Honey Chrome up on their website – http://www.honeychrome.co.uk and check out more of their music.  I would also read the information on the band.  These are two and a half men are really interesting characters, with a really unique sound.  Also click the link below for their Facebook page YouTube channel, seeing as that’s what all the kids are doing these days.

Blig of the Blog

04.03.12

Last night at the telegraph was a monster night. More fun than jellied eels!! Really. Many thanks to mallaz for sorting it all out. Genre mash up nights are defo the way forward and its sooo good to find a place to hear great music. Gingersnap and the style pile finnished the night and were better than a box of wolves nipple chips. We’re playing again at the telegraph on may 4th. Should be good to see whos on that one with us… I fancy a bit of gypsy polka punk, myself.

New vids and pics to go up in the next couple of days, happy goldfish tuesday, one and all!! (hungover/still drunk:)

Genre mash up nights…  Genre mash up music anyone?  Try some Honey!

Mind-Boggling Alien Technology at Work.

I had so much positive feedback about Honey Chrome and was so personally impressed by them that I have booked them to play for me at The Telegraph again on Friday 4th May.  If, like me, you’re an impatient little bastard, then you could catch Honey Chrome playing at The Sun Inn in Middlesbrough on 6th April.  If that’s too far or too smoggy for you to get to then they are also competing at a battle of the bands at Trillians in Newcastle on 25th April.

Joseph, Georgia and Phil of The Shake Appeal

The Shake Appeal

The South Tyneside based Alternative Rock band The Shake Appeal were the second act to perform on the night.  They performed a strong and well executed set.  They also play some very cool tracks.  Photo Dave’s video of The Shake Appeal performing ‘You Want Me?’ from Friday can be found on the below link.

The Shake Appeal’s next live performance is at Plugged Inn in Sunderland on 20th April, where they will be playing with The Creep Void among other acts.  Check The Shake Appeal out on Facebook on the link below.

Ginger Snap & The Style Pile

This night always promised to end in spectacular fashion with Ginger Snap & The Style Pile and they certainly didn’t fail to deliver.  From what I have seen up until now, Ginger Snap & The Style Pile are hands down Newcastle’s ultimate party band!

If you can find a band that can create a vibe and atmosphere half as good as these guys do then please, feel free to send their contact details my way!  They are quite frankly awesome!

Everything about this band epitomises cool.  From their name, to their sound, to the colour of their singer’s hair and the braces on their saxophone player… all cooler than the cubes in a polar bear’s cola!

Andy and Joanne

Singer Joanne ‘Ginger Snap’ Robson has a truly amazing voice and Hal on guitars combines brilliantly with Andy on wind to create a wonderfully upbeat Funky Ska flavour, which is perfectly enhanced by the Acid Jazz ingredients added by drummer Dan and Eddie on bass.  Eddie seemed to be a man of few words but is as cool as they come.  I can’t say it enough times, Ginger Snap & The Style Pile are absolutely fukkin amazing!

Watch the video of Ginger Snap and The Style Pile performing ‘Your Own Boss’ at The Telegraph on Saturday by clicking the link below.  It’s an excellent track!

Ginger Snap & The Style Pile – Your Own Boss

Cool Eddie

They brought the night’s proceedings to an epic finale with a Ginger Snap Jam, which even included me on air guitar and sax, dancing with Hal and Andy.  It was a total party atmosphere.  Ed Zachary as I had expected from a band that I hold in such high esteem.  I loved every second of Ginger Snap & The Style Pile’s set and it was truly the ultimate finish to what is, in my own personal opinion, the best event I have run… so far!

Ginger Snap & The Style Pile are confirmed to play on Saturday 7th April at ‘The Egg’, which is my next gig at The Telegraph and will be running until 2am.  Check them out on Facebook, on the link below and like their page to be kept updated on their shenanigans!

Also thanks to all of the bands for playing such great music and everybody who attended for help making it such an excellent atmosphere and creating that party vibe that I have been craving for so long!

Stand by for more musical recommendations from me and also details of my next even ‘The Egg’ at The Telegraph on Saturday 7th April, to celebrate the Easter weekend and also my birthday which is on the 4th.

Although Saturday was a success, it is still just the beginning.  The end goal is to create a party atmosphere and a live music scene in Newcastle that has the aura of a massive house party.  It’s about creating an environment where people can come and socialise, meet new people and play or listen to cool music from across all different musical genres.  Most of all, it’s about having fun.

I have now worked with several acts, across various genres who understand this vision and fit the bill perfectly.  I look forward to working with each of them again and am also always on the lookout for anyone else who can make music that stands out and enjoy a party.  If you can offer that then email me on – horrorshowartwork@live.co.uk with a brief description and links to where I can hear your music and contact detail, obviously.

EMERGENCY DOOR RELEASE – WHO ARE WE? (EP REVIEW)

EMERGENCY DOOR RELEASE – WHO ARE WE?

The much anticipated debut EP from Newcastle’s latest Indie Pop Rock revelation, Emergency Door Release, is released today.  The launch of ‘Who Are We?’ takes place at The Telegraph in Newcastle tonight, where they play alongside Ginger Snap & The Style Pile, Honey Chrome and The Shake Appeal.

https://mallazmalcolmwhite.wordpress.com/2012/03/01/this-is-what-all-the-cool-kids-are-doing-this-saturday-night/

Who Are We? is a four track EP from an incredibly talented four-piece act with a sense of fun.  Bouncing beach balls and throwing confetti about during their live performances is not uncommon with Emergency Door Release, but this is not about the band’s live work, it’s about what they have on record that I’m telling you about here.

Emergency Door Release have a knack of introducing their songs in a way that builds up suspense and tension.  The percussionary clicking at the beginning of their opening track, ‘Stand Up’, followed by the slow, extended build-up brilliantly serves to add to the listener’s anticipation that has been created by the delayed release of this EP.  The other three tracks on the EP all follow the same flavour, build up the listener’s expectations with an intro that doesn’t just jump blindly into the full swing of the track itself, and then hit you with some cool, refreshing Indie vibes that seem to be a happy mixture of The Killers, Editors and The Smiths, among others.

Emergency Door Releases vocals are performed by James Rooney, who accompanies Adam McMeiken on the guitars.  This pair’s riffs are extremely impressive and particularly striking at times.  The title track itself displays James and Adam’s combined potential as Indie Pop stars with great effect.  The second song ‘Back Another Day’ is also a brilliantly written track.  The guitar build-ups mix well the bass and drums on ‘Back Another Day’ as well as ‘Just Begun’.  The composition of the music on any of this EP’s tracks cannot be questioned.  James Rooney is an extremely talented song-writer.

The bass is executed with charisma and style by David Lloyd in ‘Just Begun’ in particular, but his precision and rhythm are certainly noteworthy throughout the EP.  His Grungy Indie Rock style bass is versatile enough to cope with the different tempos and vibes within the four tracks on ‘Who Are We?

The drums on the EP are perfectly timed and Daniel Mokhtari is the perfect solution to the drummer issues suffered by Emergency Door Release in their early days.  Daniel’s drum rolls and excellently executed use of the hi-hats and bass drums in ‘Stand Up’ really make an impact on me personally.  He doesn’t miss a beat in any single track from the EP and is proving to have been worth the wait that Emergency Door Release had to suffer in finding this final piece of the puzzle.

Emergency Door Release not only have a talented vocalist in James Rooney, but also an intelligently gifted lyricist and song-writer.  On ‘Stand Up’ his haunting style of vocals is not dissimilar to a happier version Tom Smith of the Editors, which fits the vibe the track creates.  Yet in the rest of the EP he manages to display enough range to compliment each track and add to their respective flavours with a unique sound each time.  His lyrics are witty and intellectual and also written with a distinct style.  James has written some really catchy tracks here (there’s not a poor track on the EP) and his poetry is awe-inspiring at times.  When listening to Emergency Door Release you’ll hear some expertly written rhymes and some great one-liners that will be stuck in your memory all day.  The EP’s opening line, from ‘Stand Up’, “In bed reading the news, politics and headlines, but the main story’s you…” sets the perfect mood for this chilled out contemporary love tale.

The final (and also title) track from ‘Who Are We?’ is the strongest track on this EP, in my opinion anyway.  The lyrics are incredible and you find yourself able to relate to them.  The tempo to this track is more up-beat than the rest of the EP, with really memorable guitar riffs, a more danceable bass-line and superbly performed drums.  You can listen to ‘Who Are We?’ by clicking on the song title below.
